About Josephine

Born and educated in the north, Josephine Irvin Harris Pankey, an African American woman, was sent by the A. M. E. Zion church to Arkansas to develop community schools for children of former slaves in the late 1800s. This move would change her life forever, giving her big dreams that would be fulfilled during her lifetime. As an educator, and later a realtor and land developer of three communities over 103 years ago, her accomplishments continue to touch the lives of many Arkansans. What was the driving force behind the decisions she made? Was it in her DNA?
